The different eras in horror movies have often been bookmarked by the various decades in which they occurred. The exploitation horror of the 70’s; the slasher stalking 80’s; the knowing post-modernism from the 90’s; the resurrection of the zombie genre in the 2000’s; or the resurgence of the paranormal this decade; every decade has particular trends of horror that make them distinct.
Decade with the most Horror Movies: the '10s
The '10s were a good decade for horror fans with over 355 horror movies released. The '10s delivered us titles like Gerald's Game (2017) and I Saw the Devil (2010), some of the highest rated horror movies from this decade on IMDb.

The decade with the lowest average IMDb rank is the '10s. There were some real gems in there (I Saw the Devil (2010), Tragedy Girls (2017)) and perhaps a few duds (yes Forsaken we're referring to you). But, with more than 355 horror movies release during the '10s it's no suprise the average rank is on the lower side.

With an impressive average IMDb score of 7.2 the '20s is the decade with the highest rated horror movies. However this may not be that surpising as the average was taken from only 18 movies. That's not to say these classics don't deserve the high ratings they have on IMDb.

'80s horror movies are the most searched for movies on HorrorRated. And it's pretty easy to see why. With masterpieces like The Shining (1980), Variola Vera (1982) and The Pied Piper (1986) the '80s gave us some of the craziest, goriest and most original horror movies of any other decade. Masters of horror like David Cronenberg and Sam Raimi made their names in this decade. And there is no doubt that John Carpenter was at the peak of his career in the '80s.
